First, Know Your Screws

Before you crack open any threadlocker, it's important to understand that not all screws in your mounting system are the same — and they don't all get treated the same way. The two main categories are base screws and ring screws, and mixing up their torque specs or threadlocker treatment is one of the most common installation mistakes shooters make.

Base screws attach your mount or rail adapter directly to the rifle's action. They absorb the full force of recoil with every shot and are the screws most likely to vibrate loose over time. These are typically larger fasteners — 6-48 or 8-40 on Weaver and Picatinny systems — and they're torqued to higher values than ring screws.

Weaver specs typically call for 15–18 in-lbs on 6-48 screws and 18–20 in-lbs on 8-40 screws — but always verify against your specific mount's manual, as specs vary by model. These are the screws where a small drop of blue threadlocker makes the most sense.

Small, Delicate, Easy To Damage

Ring Cap Screws

Typical: 4-40 or 5-40 Thread Size

Ring cap screws are the small fasteners that clamp the ring halves together around your scope tube. They're smaller, more delicate, and much easier to damage through over-tightening. These typically run around 15 in-lbs on the cap screws — significantly less than base screws.

Many ring designs also have crossbolts that clamp the ring body to the base — these often call for higher torque around 30 in-lbs. Know which screw is which before you start tightening. Always check the manual for your exact ring model.

The Do's And Don'ts

Even with the right product in hand, how you apply threadlocker matters as much as where. Here's the full list of what to do — and what to avoid.

The Do's
Use a torque wrench — always. Threadlocker or not, every screw needs to be torqued to spec. Guessing by feel leads to under or over-tightening, both of which cause problems.
Clean threads before applying. Oil and dirt prevent threadlocker from curing correctly and can throw off torque readings. Wipe threads with rubbing alcohol and let them dry completely first.
Apply only a small amount. A single drop or thin bead on the middle of the threads is all you need. Too much squirts out and can contaminate recoil lugs or adjacent threads.
Re-check screws after the first session. New mounting systems can settle slightly under initial recoil. After your first 10–20 rounds, return to the bench and re-verify torque on all screws.
Read the manual. Some manufacturers specify exactly which screws get threadlocker and which don't — or even apply it to factory screws. When in doubt, the manual is the authority.
The Don'ts
Don't over-tighten. Metal doesn't forgive the way plastic does. Over-torquing strips screw heads, warps mounts, and can crack or crush a scope tube. The torque wrench stops you from doing this — use it.
Don't use red threadlocker anywhere on a scope mount. Ever. It's permanent. Removing it later requires heat, solvents, and a level of frustration that isn't worth whatever marginal extra holding power you thought you were getting.
Don't skip the re-check after shooting. Vibration loosens things you didn't expect. A quick torque check after any hard session takes two minutes and catches problems before they cost you a zero.
Don't mix up screw sizes. Many mounts use different length or diameter screws in different positions. Putting the wrong screw in the wrong hole can leave a connection loose or bottom out in the threads. Lay them out and verify before installing.
Don't apply threadlocker to oily or dirty threads. It won't cure properly and you'll get a false sense of security. Clean first, apply second, torque third.
