Before you pull the scope off and start shopping for a replacement, stop — because in most cases, the optic isn't the issue. The mount is. Here's how to systematically diagnose and fix the most common scope mounting problems, so you can stop chasing zero and start shooting with confidence.

Scope Won't Hold Zero — Loose Or Improperly Torqued Screws

What's Happening

Ring cap screws or base screws that aren't torqued to spec allow the scope to shift under recoil — sometimes imperceptibly at first, then more dramatically over time. Think of it like a table with a loose leg: every bump moves it. Under-torqued screws vibrate loose. Over-torqued screws warp the scope tube or strip the threads. Either way, your zero walks.

The Fix

Use a torque wrench and tighten to the manufacturer's spec — typically 15–20 in-lbs for rings into an aluminum base. Tighten in stages, alternating screws evenly rather than fully seating one at a time. After final torque, try to gently wiggle the base by hand. If anything moves, it's not tight enough. It should feel absolutely rock-solid.

Turrets Maxed Out

Out Of Elevation Adjustment — Wrong Ring Height Or Mount Angle

What's Happening

You zero the rifle only to find you've cranked the elevation turret to (or near) its maximum travel and you're still off. This usually means the scope is mounted too low relative to the bore, forcing it to use most of its internal adjustment just to reach zero — leaving little room for real-world corrections or long-range dialing.

The Fix

Consider taller rings or a cantilever mount with a built-in MOA angle (20 MOA is common for long-range work). The goal is to keep the elevation turret near the middle of its travel range at your primary zero distance — that gives you equal adjustment room in both directions. Also make sure you're not running rings that are higher than necessary, which introduces a different set of problems.

Scope Creep

Point Of Impact Shifts Shot To Shot — Scope Slipping In Rings

What's Happening

Each shot pushes the point of impact in the same direction — usually down or to one side. The scope is physically moving inside the rings under recoil. Classic scope creep. The clamping force of the rings isn't sufficient to hold the scope tube against the repeated impulse of firing. You may also notice shiny scuff marks or scratches on the scope tube under the rings — the scope's way of showing you exactly where and which direction it's been slipping.

The Fix

Re-torque the ring screws to spec. If the problem persists, a small drop of blue (medium-strength) Loctite on the ring screws can help — though correct torque alone should be sufficient with quality rings. If you're seeing deep gouges in the scope tube rather than light surface marks, the rings may be damaged or incompatible and should be replaced entirely.

Foundation Issue

Base Or Rail Moving — Wrong Base Or Loose Receiver Screws

What's Happening

The entire mount — base and all — is shifting on the receiver. This happens when the base isn't machined specifically for your rifle's receiver hole pattern, leaving gaps that prevent the screws from pulling it tight. It can also happen when receiver screws simply weren't torqued correctly during installation. If the base moves, everything on top of it moves.

The Fix

Verify that your base is specifically made for your rifle model — not a generic fit. Remove it, clean the receiver surface, re-seat the base, and torque receiver screws to spec. Check whether your mount has a recoil lug or stop pin — if so, confirm it's properly seated in its corresponding slot on the receiver. A correctly engaged recoil lug prevents fore-aft movement that screws alone can't fully resist.

Your Zero Is Only As Good As Your Sample Size

Here's something most troubleshooting guides skip: sometimes the mount is fine and the problem is that you simply don't have enough data to know where your actual zero is. A 3-shot group tells you very little. A 5-shot group is better. But a 20, 50, or even 100-shot group? That's when you actually know your rifle and where it consistently prints.

We've all heard about a buddy's "sub-MOA rifle" — but how many rounds did he fire to prove it? Your platform is only as accurate as your data says it is. Before assuming your mount is at fault, shoot a genuinely large sample size and see where the center of your group consistently lands. If it's stable and repeatable, the mount is doing its job. If it walks between sessions or within a session, then you have a mounting problem worth diagnosing.

Quick Diagnostic Checklist

Run through this before assuming anything is broken. Most scope problems are resolved at step one or two.

Torque Every Screw To Spec

Ring caps, base screws, receiver screws — all of them. Use a torque wrench. 15–20 in-lbs is the typical target for rings into aluminum. Tighten in stages and alternate screws for even pressure.

Inspect The Scope Tube For Ring Marks

Shine a light under the rings and look for shiny spots, scuffs, or scratches. Light surface marks are normal. Deep gouges or directional scratches mean the scope has been slipping — retighten or replace the rings.

Confirm The Base Is Model-Specific

A base made for a different rifle won't pull tight against your receiver. Verify the base part number matches your exact rifle model — not just the same brand or similar style.

Check Recoil Lugs And Stop Pins

If your mount has a recoil lug or stop pin, confirm it's fully seated in its corresponding slot. A lug that's partially engaged (or not engaged at all) provides no real resistance to recoil movement.

Check Your Turret Position

If your elevation or windage turrets are near their maximum travel at your zero distance, the mount geometry is wrong — not the scope. Consider a taller mount or a 20 MOA base to center the turret's travel range.

Shoot A Larger Sample Before Making Changes

Three shots isn't a zero — it's a starting point. Shoot 20+ rounds before concluding your zero has shifted. Consistent, repeatable group location means the mount is working. A walking group means it isn't.

Invest In Quality Hardware

Cheap mounts create expensive problems. A well-made base and quality rings eliminate play, distribute recoil evenly, and hold tight shot after shot. If you've torqued everything correctly and problems persist, the hardware itself may be the issue.
